Anemoia: Nostalgia for a World I Never Knew
"A world shaped by the echoes of lives once lived, ripple across time, stirring emotions for a past I never touched. Anemoia binds these photographs into a narrative of longing for eras that exist only in fragments: in stories passed down, in the textures of decaying walls, and in the architecture of forgotten memories.
Three photoshoots take us to Skopje, my birthplace, where the post-earthquake architecture of the 1970s stands as a testament to the city's rebirth. The House of the Army, the Directorate for Hydrometeorological Service, and the National Library are monuments of the era, once thrived with life and purpose. Today, they fade into obscurity, undervalued, and overshadowed by modern trends and for my peers, these spaces have become invisible. Through my lens, I sought to express the quiet ache of seeing these structures now standing as shadows of their former selves. The presence of Ines Popović and Dora Aleksova further emphasizes the humanity and warmth of these timeless structures.
The fourth series, set in Amsterdam at the Vrije Universiteit, bridges my two homes. The WN building, soon to be demolished, holds memories of my early university days, mirroring the transient nature of Skopje’s icons and deepening my connection to the fleeting nature of space and memory. In this series, I turned the camera towards myself - a reflection on identity, migration, and the quiet yearning for permanence in a transient world.
Anemoia is a visual exploration project and a meditation on the human need to connect with something greater than ourselves. To honor what came before us. To inhabit the frame of history, only for a moment. As you walk through these photographs, I hope you, too, feel the pull of the past - into a world both familiar and foreign, asking you to feel the echo of an era still alive in the spaces we choose to preserve."
